The Making Of A Cover

Yes! We are the National Winter issue cover of Luxe Interiors + Design magazine.

We wanted to share a bit of our process and what we think makes a room cover ready. In this case, we had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Maison de Luxe showcase house at Greystone. The mother of all showcases houses. Our room was the prestigious "Mrs. Doheny's bedroom".

First off ~ a great big thanks to our vendors and collaborators that helped make the room shine.

HabiteLA provided the most exquisite antiques that drove a big part of the look and feel. Once we decided on the general concept, we developed the color palette and hit the drawing board.

Studying the floor plan the layout of the room is created along with sketching and design development with inspiration images. Some can been seen on my Pinterest board http://pinterest.com/jrummerfield/lucy-doheny/ and the below material board.

We are so grateful to Pearson for providing such sumptuous fabrics and furnishing for this stunning room. Our color theory is based on one side of the color spectrum. The pink side.

From soft blush to deep rose and berry tones. Like all shades of lip rouge. The room was design for a Hollywood starlet of a romantic bygone era.

Our signature style is to incorporate many unexpected elements, like vintage details, fresh squeezed color palette and portrait artwork.

As well as over the top details like these fabulous fringed trimmed window treatments and tasseled lambrequins.

We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. What a gorgeous cover! Here's a W&R tip: Think about how your space will look photographed. Ask yourself is this a photogenic room? It may change the way you approach a project.

Grand Greystone Mansion is known for it's Romance and ghosts. We are thrilled to be a part of the Maison de Luxe showcase house bringing it back to life and all it's glory.

Here is our design for Mrs. Doheny's bedroom. We used all shades of pink with a Hollywood Starlet in mind. Little did we know we were channeling the original bedroom...Later, once the room was installed, I was sent this photograph of Mrs. Doheny's original bedroom. I couldn't believe how the framework and composition of the room was so similar. Especially, with the mural behind the bed! Kismet? or were we possessed by Lucy Doheny?

All in all the house turned out magnificent! And I am sure the spirits would agree.

What a special night at LACMA, thanks to our dear friend, Oliver Furth and the DADC. Linda Komaroff, curator of Islamic Art led a private tour through a stunning exhibit titled, 'Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts'. Also, it was such a treat to be in Resnick Pavilion on a closed evening; not to mention viewing the space mid-installation of another upcoming exhibit on Modernism. As you can see in the background here.

The World of Franz Kline

We always enjoy participating in LCDQ's Legends of La Cienega installations. This year's theme is "Celebrate Art". One of our favorite artists is Franz Kline, of which we selected as our inspiration for Szalon's window.

Franz Kline's dynamic artworks were figurative, social realism with cubist overtones. During the 1950’s, Kline developed his unique vocabulary of gestural brushstrokes and became associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement.

They very expressive, evoking the urban landscapes of New York and Pennsylvania. Kline used ordinary household paint and large housepainters’ brushes to quickly apply paint to canvases tacked directly to the wall. The black brushstrokes go beyond the edges of the canvas creating an energy and dynamism, while also giving the effect of presenting a detail or huge fragment of an even more monumental image. In the late 1950’s, Kline introduced color into the paintings, but he died before it became a major part of the work.Art and poetry from MOMA exhibit.
Here is a sneak peek into the Franz Kline installation as we put the window together!These red doors were salvaged from a beautiful Hollywood style Estate in Hombly Hills from the 1940's. The hardware and knobs are stunning. A must see in person.Come to Szalon and see the unveiling!

Many people, including myself, swoon over a delightfully finished project via magazines, books and blogs. Such instant bliss and gratification! But there is much effort in getting from point A to B in the professional interior design world. Did you know most projects take up to a year in preparation before being unveiled? The design process is one of my favorite parts of a project. From the planning, the inspiration & the sourcing to the sketching & the drawing.

Many ideas are reviewed, edited, tossed, cataloged and developed. Design is not arbitrary or random.

A huge part of the project is the visual inspiration. Creating insatiable project Mood/Inspiration Boards is key for a road map and documenting a vision.Sourcing for the perfect fabric/textiles is major leg work, yet a fanciful feast for the eyes. Finding the right materials, textures and colors is a wonderful hunt.

Layouts and edits are essential to the process and having a project "On purpose". Typically goes unseen or appreciated, but to us it is all about the magic of process.
This is a part of why we love what we do.My favorite professor once said, "Design ends when you run out of time or money".
Ain't that a fact.
Let's not forget, hiring an interior designer is definitely a luxury service.
Some how it has become quite diluted in this day and age.
Don't let TV or DIY cheapen the expertise, craft, magic and art of this profession!
It takes a lot of experience, work, time, care and effort to usher a successful project through from concept to completion.
There is major value in that alone -- getting what you want.

2010 was an EPIC year. In the last few months, we graced the cover of RUE's inaugural issue. Town & Country featured me in a great article on LA's next female interior designer's. Luxe magazine celebrated our Chasen's Entertainment center. And our signature mirror, the Sunset Mirror has prominently taken stage in the film "Black Swan".

This year, titled Wish You Were Here, takes you on a wonderful journey through fantasy travel, sly visual wit and far-flung places. Each window features visual influences as diverse as Roman mythology, 1940s Hollywood musicals, the original Penn Station, and the very first science fiction film. Above is titled "The Scenic Route". This great little package consists of design concepts, images, wallpaper samples, fabric samples and floor plans all wrapped in a box with a bow & sent out our client who lives afar.Like any gift, this box is full of small treasures and blissful ideas to note.

This client preferred a tailored, yet dramatic modern look. Or as she called it "Rocker Chic".

A sneak peek behind our design process for the Ritz-Carlton Residences. Inspired by the heydays of Old Hollywood hotels such as the the Chateau and Beverly Hills Hilton, we aimed to create the same essence for a new frontier ~ downtown Los Angeles.

Our mood boards feature sumptuous and vamp tones such as Aubergine, Charcoal gray, Lilac and Smoked Bronze saluting Film Noir.

Opulent and dramatic pieces combined with sparkle that make a classic statement. Animal prints, and noteworthy furnishings evoke the days of cocktail parties and entertaining.

To carry into the twenty-first century of re-building downtown Los Angeles.

Menswear Inspired

In celebration of Fall we are featuring a small space with a big bang! One of our bachelor client's purchased a studio downtown as a retreat space for weekend getaways. Our approach to the project concept was men's fashion wear, especially Gucci's 2010 Fall Collection . Here is a sumptuous camel coat and ensemble by Gucci translated into interior space mixing velvets & linen textures with dramatic shades of charcoal, gray, gold and royal red.

Divine get up with espresso velvet coat, loafers and leather weekender by Gucci, absolute perfection. The sitting area featuring a velvet chair, charcoal wallcoverings and gold sheers.A textured fur coat in camel; a light, crisp gray shirt with taupe weekender bag by Gucci. Cozy and chic translates into this bedroom with a shaggy Alpaca rug, gray and taupe linens surrounded by mirrored and pin-stripe wallpapered walls.Remember to live large and fierce no matter the size of space!

Tobias Wong In Memoriam

Tobias Wong
1974-2010

Born in Vancouver, Tobias Wong was a New York artist and product design shining star of our time.

He made his fame by taking ordinary items and tweaking them to his understanding.

He pushed us to see a reevaluation of what we thought we know about art and design.

Wong coined his sense of style and art as 'paraconceptual', meaning

to expose the similarities between art and design.

One of his most popular pieces of his time, and one of my favorites: Ballistic Rose, a brooch made out of bullet proof nylon. It's meant to 'protect' the heart in times of conflict.

In 1999 he created a line of unauthorized Burberry buttons and they rose to popularity.In 2000, Burberry quickly caught on and made the buttons part of their 2000 ad campaign. (They also deleted the link to the photo originally posted on this blog.)

In 2001 he took an ordinary Philippe Stark Bubble Club Chair, lit it from within and called it "This is a lamp".

"influenced by dada and, especially, fluxus, he questioned authorship
through appropriation; held a mirror to our desires and absurdities; upended the hierarchy between design and art, and the precious and the banal; and helped redefine collaboration and curation as creative practices."

His reverse "killer" diamond ring and feather lighter were of the many edgy items that epitomized his sense of style.

Only the good die young. His superb achievements and prodigal talents were beyond his time. His legacy will live on and cherished by design enthusiasts, collectors and museums around the world. He will be truly missed and gone too soon.

To us, old Hollywood living has such a signature look and feel. While visiting the prop house of historic Warner Bros. studios in Burbank the other day, Ron and I reminisced about the incredible and inspirational lifestyles this town has been built on.

Audrey Hepburn with husband actor and director Mel Ferrer at their home on Kimridge Road in Beverly Hills, 1956.In 1964 actress Sophia Loren posed for photographer Alfred Eisenstaed in the villa outside Rome she shared with her husband, producer Carlo Ponti. “I remember our dwelling with great fondness,” recalls her son Carlo Ponti, Jr., today the music director and conductor of Southern California’s San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra. “I think it was—and still is—the most beautiful house I have ever seen."

Marlene Dietrich's Beverly Hills residence in the mid-1930s reflected her preference for high-contrast black-and-white furniture in a home that featured a tuxedo sofa, a mural of a leopard and a zebra, a zebra-print throw, 19th-century Chinese wallcoverings and an ankle-deep carpet of fur. “I would like to have lived in Hollywood at another time,” Dietrich once remarked.

“Legend has it that Julia Jean Turner was discovered at Schwab’s Drugstore,” remarks Cheryl Crane, daughter of actress Lana Turner. “But, in truth, Billy Wilkerson, a talent scout, spotted her at the Top Hat Café, a soda fountain across from Hollywood High School. He took her to Warner Bros., where she was renamed Lana, cast in several movies and dubbed the Sweater Girl.” As such, Lana Turner became one of the most durable pinups of her generation. “That image clung to me for the rest of my career,” Turner observed in her autobiography. “I was the sexual promise, the object of desire. And as I matured, my façade did too, to an image of coolness and glamour—the movie star in diamonds, swathed in white mink.” She was in her early twenties when she purchased a modest cottage in a lush, quiet neighborhood north of Sunset Boulevard. For the interiors, Turner created a cocoon of frills and flounces and surrounded herself with china figurines, ruffled lampshades and an enormous teddy bear.Doris Day

“There’s always been just one way—what’s right for me,” said the indomitable Mae West. Like many performers, West was a mixture of show-off and recluse, a personality at once calculatingly public and insistently private. These two facets of the actress’s nature were reflected in her home and the life she led there—not in any balanced way but, like nesting boxes, one hidden within the other. Outside was the Mae West persona, sex-obsessed and self-loving, for which she found a domestic equivalent in the apartment she moved into in 1932, when she first arrived in Los Angeles, and where, in what may well be a record for residential longevity in Hollywood, she remained for the next 48 years. Located on the sixth floor of the Ravenswood, an Art Déco building on Rossmore Avenue whose other tenants included Ava Gardner, Hedda Hopper and Judy Garland, West’s apartment was modest in size. It had just two bedrooms, a tiny kitchen, and common rooms that were by no means grand, but the decoration aspired to grandeur, and beyond. “Quality, quality—that’s all I heard [from my mother],” West told Life magazine in 1969. “Everything has proportion, nothing is jarring. Everything is symphony.”

In 1946 Gene Kelly and his first wife, Betsy Blair, bought a modest home at 725 North Rodeo Drive that everyone in their circle would regard as one of the most vibrant social hubs. “A gang of us used to meet on weekends, most of them members of ‘The MGM Family,’” wrote actor Hume Cronyn in his 1991 memoir A Terrible Liar. “These gatherings would shift from house to house, but those I remember best were at the house of Gene and Betsy Kelly.” Famous for his athletic ability and rather notorious competitiveness, Kelly would invite his friends to play touch football and volley ball, providing generous spreads of food and drink, and enjoying sing-alongs at the piano with the likes of Judy Garland and Hoagy Carmichael. Most memorable for his guests, however, was the elaborate and complicated version of charades that Kelly invented, known simply as The Game. “The trick was to pick a series of phrases or quotations so outrageous that they would defy the abilities of the most accomplished pantomimist,” writes Cronyn. It was nearly impossible to beat the Kellys, he says, who shared a “radar-like communication.” “He was a very bright man, in addition to being a talented man,” author and Hollywood historian Rudy Behlmer remarks with admiration. “He was very articulate and his recall was not faulty.” By all accounts, Kelly was exceedingly happy in the North Rodeo Drive residence. There he would live until a tragic Christmas fire in 1983 destroyed it and everything in it, including unique works of art, collected papers, and Kelly’s honorary Oscar for his brilliance and versatility as an actor, director, singer, dancer, and, especially, a choreographer. But so fond was Kelly of the house and its location that when it burned to the ground, he had a new house built in its place on the same property and lived there with his third wife until he died in 1996.

Few celebrities exemplified the movie community’s shift to simpler lifestyles better than Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, who moved to a 20-acre ranch in the sparsely settled San Fernando Valley town of Encino several months after their marriage in 1939.

Which brings us back to today. Burbank still has that ranch style essence of decades ago. The ghosts of the past still, are such an inspiration and the essence lives on. It is a wonderful thing, nostalgia and to be right in the middle of it is priceless.

Westweek is somewhat of the only thing the interior design community has that is close to what fashion week is to the fashion industry. This year had a kind of lightness in the air and we had a BLAST! Here are the dapper gents designer Felix Pfeifle, David Serrano from the tony storefront "Outside Downtown" with Ron and me.

Master Michael Taylor

One of our favorite California decorating influences is Michael Taylor. He was dubbed the "James Dean of Interior Design" by Diana Vreeland and "the best decorator in the United States " by society and fashion photographer Cecil Beaton. Michael Taylor revolutionized interior design in the 1970's and 1980's with the "California Look".

He was also very well known for his exquisite taste, extravagant shopping trips and ability to transform beautiful spaces using antiques and odd objects.

Michael Taylor ~ "People should have the satisfaction of developing their own personal tastes and of expressing themselves in their own homes with originality."He could do it all, even though most of his famous spaces were white on white. He was fantastic at mixing it up (which we love) shown here - 17th-century Italian chairs join a 19th-century table inlaid with pietre dure. A divine vigniette.
We recently met the author of his tribute book "Michael Taylor Interior Design"
Stephen M. Salny at the PDC. What an interesting design enthusiast and conversationalist!

I so enjoyed this excerpt from a House Beautiful article
interviewing his employee Suzanne Tucker:

"There was one moment that endeared him to me forever. We were driving to an installation and he pulled up in front of the house. I was gathering my things to get out when I realized he wasn't moving. He was still holding on to the steering wheel, staring straight ahead. I said, "Michael, what's the matter?" He took a deep breath and said, "Do you think it's going to look okay?" I said, "Michael, it's going to be fabulous. As always." He looked at me, winked, and said, "Okay, kid. Let's go."

Old shoes raise the ground behind them in hurried steps in the cold winter. Torn from the road used from the time, they accompany our future. Old shoes, lead us into tomorrow's mysterious street. Old shoes portrait of personality, high, or low-cut, in leather or satin. Some people have many, and unfortunately there are those whose feet have none. Old shoes as a story suggest the fate of the soul.

Jonathan Adler is such a doll, literally. So talented with endless whimiscial, fantasty like ideas. It is no wonder we love him. We have so enjoyed working with him and his team . All the models in this line are hand-made in Jonathan Adler's Soho studio and then the pieces are produced in Peru from brown stoneware which peeks through the sheer white glaze. WE love the Lord and Lady cups. Quite fitting for Ron and me.

Designer Matriarch Bunny Williams created a delightful space for the Kips Bay Showcase House. What a Breath of fresh air! Bunny goes down as a legend in our Style File. She has mastered the elements of a tastefully decorated room. Thank you Bunny for being such a classic and bright inspiration!

BUNNY WILLIAMS interview with Douglas Brenner featured in House Beautiful Magazine:
"I just wanted to be happy — and color makes you happy. Turquoise is intense and exciting. But you have to balance strong colors with neutrals. I always stand in a room and think about the balance — you've got to get your proportions right. I say, "Okay, where's the furniture going to go?" I had the fireplace and the big strong botanicals, so I wanted the other end to have the big strong bookcase. But I didn't want it obviously balanced. I broke the symmetry so it doesn't get boring. You have to throw it off a bit."

And you scaled the pattern to hold its own.
I learned all about scale in my 22 years working with Albert Hadley. In a high-ceilinged room, it's exciting to feel the height. You also want intimacy, but if you keep everything low, you throw the excitement away. That's why I used those big, tall planters on the table and the pedestals with the urns in the windows — it makes you notice the height of the window. And the folding screen takes your eye upward. But I tilted the mirror over the mantel downward to reflect the room and the people — not the ceiling.

Why did you paint the ceiling gray?
White ceilings are boring. This one is not just gray, but shiny, which gives it a lift. It makes it ethereal, airy, almost skylike.

Trina Turk has been a California fashion favorite for years. I frequent her clothing ateliers often as a part of my shopping regimen and absolutely love her vintage, yet tailored look. We were delighted to learn that our stylish friend launched a collection of resort inspired fabrics for outdoor furnishings with Schumacher. C Magazine sponsored a launch party at Trina's curated mid-century home, attracting most of LA's biggest design mavens. Here we are with Trina at the big event....and hello to the graceful Ruthie Sommers!

I had the pleasure of meeting a legendary painter last night! Joshua Petker's star has been rising and soon will be a force to be reckoned with. I am so glad to be on this creative journey in Los Angeles watching all kinds of creative stars being born especially his! Joshua's paintings are haunting yet beautiful and have an essence of days and era's gone by. His own technique is impeccable and painstakingly perfected to his standard. His work is sought after and coveted by many collectors and is currently working on a myriad of art shows and fashion installations.
JP ~ "I used to say I was born in the wrong century. The way overly dramatic kids claim to be old souls living in the present day, I was convinced I was secretly an impressionist painter, meant more for turn of the century's demi-monde opulence rather than today's world of animators, illustrators, and monster movie artists. I didn't go to art school. I don't know all the proper techniques. I learned colour theory by doing graffiti, but the story of the graffiti-artist-turned-fine-art-painter has been played out since the mid-'80s. My own life seemed to be working against me. I was convinced I should have been born in 1850.Then I realized that I was approaching everything wrong. I live in Hollywood, this century's den of inequity and excess. I have eccentric colourful friends that rival the models of Degas and Renoir, I spend nights at Los Angeles bars that could rival those painted by Monet, and as this is 2007 I have access to neon pink and hot orange that I imagine even Van Gogh wouldn't know how to utilize. I am a contemporary painter interested in historic themes. There isn't anything wrong with that. I don't have any art school loans to pay back. I primarily paint women because I'm tremendously influenced by Klimt - and really focused on beauty."

Intriguing Griffin gargoyles to dilapidated iron gates.Incredilble garden urns (fret not, those sold stickers are for W&R!) A lucky client of ours scored these for their wonderful backyard.Ornamental plates and facades from deconstructed wonders.
They don't make 'em like they used to!

Saint Laurent and Bergé were patrons of art and design as well as collectors. In 1974 the couple commissioned a pair of mirrors from Claude Lalanne for the music room of their rue de Babylone apartment. Ultimately, 15 bronze mirrors with foliate motifs by Lalanne covered the walls. Visible through the space is a Roman torso in the entrance hall.

Julius Shulman Part III

Julius Shulman is one of our legendary mentors. He joined us at our "High Style" book signing and signed the his featured pages. Yes! Julius has made a cameo in our design book.

He photographed my residence in Palm Springs by architect Donald Wexler. A historic 1960's steel framed home, now on the historic register. Julius came to us and said, "there are some homes I never had a chance to photograph in Palm Springs and I would like to now". We had a memorable day of photography, I felt so lucky to share in his creative process. The Palm Springs Museum had an epic exhibition of all of his Palm Springs images and can be found in this wonderful book "Julius Shulman: Palm Springs"Julius Shulman: Palm Springs focuses on Shulman's extensive and historically lengthy documentation of the modern architectural movement in the Palm Springs area. This exhibition will mark the seventieth anniversary of Shulman's first photographic assignment in the desert (Richard Neutra's Grace Miller House, photographed in 1938).

Home to movie stars and celebrities (featured projects include E. Stewart Williams' Frank Sinatra House, and Paul Williams' Lucille Ball/Desi Arnaz House), the Palm Springs area contains some of the movement's finest buildings. In fact, one of Shulman's most famous photographs (and one of the most famous photographs in the history of the medium) is of Richard Neutra's masterpiece, the Kaufmann House, located in Palm Springs. Many of the photographs in the exhibition have never been previously shown.

We have had the great pleasure of working with the master photography legend, Julius Shulman.
We did a photo assignment with the 98 year old in Palm Springs. At my house (Jaime) designed by Donald Wexler. We have also visited him at his stunning mid-century home off Mullholand in Los Angeles. Just recently, he graced us with his presence at our High Style book signing in Los Angeles and is quite the charmer! But don't be mistaken. His work is unprecedented and beyond fantastic. He has photographed most every famous piece of architectural history and has made a life for himself and namesake for over 7 decades. Trina Turks dramatic collection of indoor/outdoor prints for Schumacher, many of which were originally designed for her resort collections, are inspired by the poolside lifestyle of Los Angeles and Palm Springs, and also the variety of cultural influences and landscapes that are found in California. Bold geometric patterns are mixed with prints derived from natural motifs, and also designs discovered in Trina’s extensive collection of vintage apparel. The color palette of this collection is fashion-influenced; bright and breezy shades of turquoise, citron, watermelon and marine are combined with smart neutrals such as sand dune and charcoal, giving these outdoor suitable prints a thoroughly modern appeal. Angelo Donghia

We recently visited the Donghia showroom and sat in on a delightful lecture by President Crans Baldwin. He featured archival photos of Angelo Donghia, founder of Donghia.

Donghia has always focused its design attention on both comfort and style—providing clients with chic, sophisticated interiors and products. Throughout the 70’s and early 80’s, Mr. Donghia’s client list grew to include a who’s who of celebrities and design stars, including Halston, Liza Minelli, Donald and Ivana Trump, Mary Tyler Moore, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren. Many of Mr. Donghia’s installations and own homes, in New York, Connecticut, and Key West, were featured in countless magazines and have remained timely and timeless to this day.

Design Glut, a pair of two hipster gals Kegan and Liz, really get future forward product design. We met them at ICFF 2008 and their star is rising!

We get a kick out of their witty approach to contemporary hot topics such as the smoking gun cigarette holder:

Paris Hotel Antiques is a wonderful curiosity shop in San Francisco. We love browsing their treasures rescued from old hotels, cruise ships, restaurants and estates. They always seem to have such unique old curios and collectors pieces. Perfect for the person with discerning taste who seems to have everything!

1940's Sterling Silver Horse Cufflinks

Handsome pair of 1940's sterling silver and vermeil cufflinks with double horse heads. (Vermeil consists of a sterling silver base that is coated or plated with gold). The sterling horse heads measure 1-1/2" long by 1/2" wide. Marked "sterling." Great detail. Excellent condition.

Vintage Limoges Tray & Cup

Beautiful handpainted Limoges small tray and cup dating to c. 1940's. The tray measures 5-1/4" by 3-1/8." The cup measures 3-1/2" tall and 2-3/4" in diameter. Pretty pattern. French markings on bases of both. Excellent condition with no chips or cracks.

Rare Hotel Lankershim, Los Angeles Water Pitcher

Outstanding LARGE water pitcher from the Lankershim Hotel which was located at Broadway and 7th in Los Angeles, Calif. This hotel in no longer in existence.

This pitcher is an amazing size and holds 10 cups of liquid. It measures 9-1/2" tall and 9" from handle to spout. It has a bright shiny patina with minimal wear and weighs over 3 pounds. There is some plate loss on the inside bottom, but can still be used for serving. It is engraved, "Lankershim." Manufactured by Gorham. Dates to the early 1900's.

Large hotel silver water pitchers are rare and this is a beauty!

Vintage Sterling Bichon Frise Dog Brooch

This is one of the remaining dog brooches purchased from an estate collection of all dog jewelry. 1940's sterling silver Bichon Frise dog.

Measures 1-3/4" by 1." Marked Sterling. Wonderful detail.
